 · Vijay Iyer (piano) and Rudresh Mahanthappa (alto sax) have performed as a duo for years, but Raw Materials is their long-awaited debut on disc. The repertoire, save for the final track, “Hope,” is from a commissioned suite called “Sangha: Collaborative Fables,” with composer credits split roughly down the : David R. Adler.

 ·  · Pianist Vijay Iyer and alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa are long-time collaborators. Mahanthappa's an important member of Iyer's quartet and vice-versa, and the two have produced a substantial body of recorded work together. The two musicians' ten-year-old Raw Materials duo project, however, has remained officially undocumented until now.

 · Pianist Vijay Iyer and alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa are releasing their new disc, Raw Materials (Savoy Jazz), on May Iyer and Mahanthappa have been musical collaborators since Steve Coleman introduced them to each other in “We both know immediately that we had made a connection,” Iyer and Mahanthappa write in the disc’s liner notes.

His sixteenth release as a leader/co- leader, Rudresh pays tribute to his greatest influences with an album of interpretations. Presented with characteristically original arrangements in trio format, Rudresh has enlisted the talents of long-time associates François Moutin on bass and Rudy Royston on drum.
